This weekend is the first Small Business Saturday in the UK, and many are expecting big things. Here is a look into the history of this event and how service businesses can also get involved.
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express and has been running in the US since 2010. The event was started in order to recognise those small businesses that also do their bit through boosting the economy, creating jobs and preserving the local independent shops around the country. This year’s Small Business Saturday has already occurred in America and around 500,000 small businesses got involved, attracting roughly a 100 million consumers.
Small Business Saturday is not just for retailers, though, services businesses can also get involved and here are a few steps to do so:
- Be prepared
Registering for the event couldn’t be simpler! Just click here, fill in your details and you can choose to have marketing material posted to you or download it straight onto your computer. The marketing material involves posters, official Small Business Saturday logos and more. All of which you can use to show your involvement and inform your community of what will be going on.
- Join in the conversation online
The day has become a big success due to social media easily allowing the idea to spread. So join in the conversation on Twitter and Facebook using #SmallBizSatUK. Remember to use a range of text and images to showcase your involvement and spread the word.
- Join the conversations locally
The more businesses that get involved the better. So tell others in your local area to join in to increase the awareness of the day and increase the amount of trade on the day. Perhaps even partner up with nearby similar businesses to showcase each other’s products and services. For example, beauticians could offer their services in nearby hairdressers or vice versa for the day.
- Get your whole team involved
Make sure all your employees know about the day so you can offer great customer service and really show off your business and its services. Provide customers with video demonstrations, clear and detailed descriptions of your services and if possible offer samples.
